Great Open Wheel Night Fan Club Meeting

The final General Membership Meeting for this spring was held on Saturday, March 7, at Crehan’s Irish Pub in Belleville. It was the annual “Open Wheel Night” and we had Open Wheelers in abundance. Over 50 members and guests were there to enjoy the evening.

Premier Interviewer, Eileen Waters vonHatten, did her usual good job of bringing out the information when talking with midget racer Brad Loyet as well as photographer turned racer, Kevin Horcher. In addition we had the Sprint Car racing brothers, Craig and Patrick Budde and their father.

Jack Pugh reported on the 2009 season schedules for the area tracks and Lenny Batycki told us how the USAC .25 Series races would work at Gateway International Raceway in conjunction with the Gold Crown Midget races to be held at Tri-City Speedway in October.

We were happy to see Wally McDuffey back in good form, discussing how things should be with Joe Loyet and Jr. Knepper.

We found out that several died in the wool oval track racers drove down, to Salem, Mo. over the previous weekend and were quite impressed by the Rallye racers who did their thing in the midst of a snowstorm.

After members did a little bit of business (approving the revision of the club by-laws) the rest of the evening was spent wishing Wally Hamant a happy 80 th birthday, Don Figler a Happy Birthday one day late, helping Art Knepper devour his birthday cake, and wishing Steve Kempf a Happy Birthday 2 weeks early. A lot of good, old fashioned bench racing was going on almost all night long. The 50/50 amounted to $60 and many members and guests won attendance prizes. As you can see in the accompanying photo, Brad Loyet took a giant mentor along home with him.

As far as the members go, from now through the summer its racing , racing, racing. Attending, participating, talking about and enjoying until the next Membership meeting in November. We had a great time and now we look forward to getting together at Fan Club Nights at area tracks with the first one scheduled for Friday night, April 24 at Tri-City Speedway. Remember to show your current Membership ID Card and get in FREE! Thanks to Kevin and Tammy Gundaker for this gift to our members.

Hope to see you all at TC on April 24, 2009
