Sandi Takes a Road Trip
August 17th, 2009

On Wednesday, May 20, Fan Club Treasurer, Sandi Pezold and the Membership Secretary, Wanda Knepper, took a road trip to Indy for Mari George’s Old Timer’s luncheon. (Sandi is not the Old Timer, Wanda is.) It was a gorgeous day and it was also Community Day at the Speedway so there were a lot of things going on and people around to enjoy them. Driver autograph sessions, giveaways, a “Winner’s Circle” photo spot to take your picture with the milk bottle, the garage area was open for walking through, etc. The museum brought a selection of their ‘babies’ out into the sunshine and had them lined up on the pit apron. You could drive your own car around the race track (at a max 30 mph, but, hey) and there was a steady stream of cars on the track. We even saw one guy stop in the finish line and jump out and kiss the bricks. I’ll bet that memory will last with him forever. Are you familiar with Smart Cars? There was a Smart Car Club that took a drive led by a car fitted with three of the largest flags attached to one of the smallest cars we
have ever seen. It’s a wonder the car didn’t tip over. Retired racers seen on the grounds included, Steve Krisiloff, Ralph Ligouri, JP, Jr., and Bob Harkey to name a few. Sandi wanted to volunteer to make the race day announcement, “Drivers Start Your Engines” but when she was told that she must own the track to do that and a phone call to Bill did not produce authorization to purchase the Speedway, she gave that idea up.
If any of you want to take a day to ramble around the Speedway, this Community Day is a good day to choose for laid back, Road Trip to Indy.
